Physio for race runners at Half Marathon

Leading physiotherapy practices will be offering treatments for runners at the 2013 SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon.

Sports massage specialists from Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy, will be amongst a number of practices who will be on hand at Don Valley Stadium to help prepare competitors for the 13.1 mile race.

For a minimum donation of £3 towards the benefiting charities, runners will also have the chance to access sports massage treatments in the stadium at the end of the race.

More than 6,000 people will hit the city of Sheffield streets for the half marathon on Sunday, May 12 to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Colin McCurdy, a Sports Massage and Rehabilitation Therapist at Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy, which is based at Virgin Active Health Club, in Millhouses, said: “The Sheffield Half Marathon is one of the biggest and most prestigious road races in the city’s sporting calendar so we are really proud to be supporting the event.

“Completing a race of this length can take its toll on the body, which is why massage is so important. It helps runners before the race by stimulating nerves, activating muscles and getting the body ready for activity. After the race, it’s important to help relax tight muscles and remove toxins that have built up.”

This SIG Insulations Sheffield Half Marathon and 3k Fun Run will take place at Don Valley Stadium at 9am.

The official charities for 2013 are: Myasthenia Gravis Association, St Luke’s Hospice, Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre South Yorkshire, Sheffield Wildlife Trust, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Support Dogs, Breast Cancer Care, the Children’s Hospital Charity, Safe at Last and the Sheffield Academy of Young Leaders (SAYLS).

Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy specialists will be located in next to the baggage area in the stadium.
