A Sheffield woman has transformed her life after losing more than a third of her body weight through exercise.
Jane Rhodes was nearly 16 stone and did virtually no physical activity when she decided it was time to make a change. The 39-year-old, who lives in Lowedges, in Sheffield, visited Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy at Virgin Active, in Millhouses, where she started a structured fitness programme.
Jane explains: “It was the summer of 2010 when I decided I needed to take action. I was almost 16 stone, I was so unfit and I had never really taken part regular exercise before. I made an appointment through the gym for a review and that’s where I came across Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy.
“I met one of their personal trainers, Michael Lee, and after speaking to him and listening to what he had to say and how he could help me I followed the Personal Training route with him.”
Over the last three years, Jane has taken part in training sessions at least once a week with Michael, completing cardio work, core work and strength work.
“I think what I like about Michael was his confidence that we could work towards my goals. I was unhappy and didn’t have any confidence. Michael had the confidence for me.
“I’m a completely different person now to then. I’ve gone from no exercise at all to regular exercise. Thanks to the support and guidance from Michael, I now exercise most days.
Jane, who has lost five and half stone in total, now runs 10K races and is to start training for a half marathon next.
“I’m a lot stronger physically. I’m lot more toned and leaner than I would be for losing a lot of weight without the correct exercise in place to deal with all the ‘wobbly’ bits. Mentally my mind is clearer, I feel more confident in myself and the way other people view me. I sleep better at night as well.”
In 2010, Jane was nominated for a healthy living award in recognition of her achievements.
“To top it all off, it felt amazing to be nominated in my Slimming World class for Woman of the Year! We celebrated within our class and I had to do speech - something else I would never have done without having the confidence that Michael has given me.”
Michael Lee, who was nominated for Personal Trainer of the Year at the 2013 National Fitness Awards, said: “Jane is fantastic example of dedication and diligence to better herself through exercise. It’s amazing how exercise and diet can transform not only someone’s body shape, but also their perspective on self image and mentality on life. It’s an absolute pleasure to work with Jane, and she deserves every last bit of praise for what she has achieved.”
