Top physiotherapy practice brings ART treatment to Sheffield
A leading Sheffield physiotherapy practice has become one of only a handful in the UK to become accredited in providing the gold standard in soft tissue healthcare.
Sheffield Sports Science & Physiotherapy (SSMP) is now practicing the Active Release Technique (ART) - a highly specialised soft tissue based massage technique which treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.
It can help relieve a number of conditions, such as headaches, back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.
ART was started by Dr Michael Leahy in the USA more than 30 years ago. He developed the technique for elite athletes as a way to treat soft tissue disorders so they could get back to peak performance as quickly as possible.
Dr Michael Lee, consultant sports physiotherapist and sports scientist at SSMP, said: "We are one of only a small handful of practices to offer ART in the UK so it's great that we can bring this treatment to more patients in Sheffield.
"ART therapy is a very specialised skill and unlike any other therapies we currently use."
Dr Lee studied for four years in countries all across the world to gain the accreditation, completing numerous examinations in order to become an ART expert.
"It's a very exciting time for Sheffield Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy because we have this brand new tool to use when treating patients. It means we can get to the root of the problem and make much quicker progress in relieving pain."
