Health Screening and Body Composition

Have you experienced trying to lose weight but it piled back on as soon as you stopped dieting? If you answered yes then you are certainly not alone. We see many patients that measure their weight at home with conventional scales. Then, they choose a diet that causes massive weight loss at the beginning but as soon as they stop dieting, they only have to look at food and the weight is right back there! Why? Because often, body fat is maintained and water and muscle are lost instead.

The biggest mistake people make with weighing themselves on scales at home is that they do not know what they are losing. Without a thorough and objective Health Screening & Body Composition Assessment, it is impossible to tell whether you are losing water, muscle, or body fat.

Body Composition Test

Have you ever been baffled by the numbers on the BMI Measurement scale? Perhaps you look healthy but your BMI is high, or the other way around? You may have a 'healthy' BMI but still have a high body fat percentage, low muscle or bone mass. Or you may have been classified as 'overweight' but you simply have a heavy muscle mass and strong bones. Knowing your visceral fat percentages, water levels and fat percentages specific to body areas gives you a much more accurate picture of your overall health. This knowledge, in addition to our help to improve your long-term health, is critical in helping prevent disease.

Bioimpedance Test

There are many gadgets you can buy Argos or Amazon that claim to give you readings for your body fat, water levels and muscle mass. The problem is, the electrical currents pass through your body at only two points.

Sheffield Sports Medicine has the latest and best technology to take your measurements with the state of the art Tanita MC-980MA PLUS, also used by Team GB. It is the most exact Bioimpedence Scale that gives us a clinically accurate body composition test. To get your readings, you will stand on the bioimpedence scale. This scale sends a painless electrical current through specific areas of your body to take measurements.

The electrical current passes through four points of your body at a different rate depending on whether it’s passing through liquid, fat, water, bone, muscle or organs. By doing so, it tells us what your body is made up of and in what quantities: whether is it around your arms, legs, torso, organs etc.

We conduct body composition and bioimpedance tests to measure what is going on in your body and how it might be changing over time.

We have helped thousands of professional athletes and Celebrities measure how their body is changing and then advise them on how to make it even better for long term sustainability, health and improved performance.

The Tanita MC-980MA PLUS helps us to provide you with comprehensive information to help you reach your goals.

The Bioimpedance test measures your body composition by recording data in 11 areas specific to individual body parts:

  • Body Weight

  • Fat Percentages specific to body areas

  • Body Water Percentage

  • Lean Muscle Weight specific to body areas

  • Basal Metabolic Rate

  • Body Mass Index

  • Bone Density

  • Fat Mass specific to body areas

  • Percentage Visceral Fat

  • Water Level

  • Metabolic Age

Our expert takes these readings and combines them with our Body Composition Test. So, rather than just percentages, we can tell you how many g or kg of muscle or fat, for example, you are carrying in different areas of your body. We’re able to tell you how much fat you may have sitting on top of your organs and whether this is detrimental to your health.
